چکیده

Toxic compounds in sewage or industrial wastewater may inhibit the biological activity of activated sludge impairing the treatment process. This paper evaluates the Inhibition Capacity Index (ICI) for the assessment of activated sludge in the presence of toxicants. In this study, activated sludge was obtained from industrial treatment plants and was also synthetically produced. Continuous respirometric measurements were carried out in a reactor, and the oxygen uptake rate profile obtained was used to evaluate the impact of inhibiting toxicants, such as dissolved copper, phenol, sodium alkylbenzene sulfonate and amoxicillin, on activated sludge. The results indicate that ICI is an efficient tool to quantify the intoxication capacity. The activated sludge from the pharmaceutical industry showed higher resistance than the sludge from other sources, since toxicants are widely discharged in the biological treatment system. The ICI range was from 58 to 81% when compared to the synthetic effluent with no toxic substances.

Coupled Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR)/Activated Sludge Treatment of Synthetic Wastewater with High Concentration of Sulfate and COD

A synthetic wastewater with high concentration of sulfate and COD was treated in anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) coupled with an activated sludge. The work was accomplished in two phases. In the first phase, the concentration of sulfate was kept constant at 500mg/l, but COD concentration was increased from (3000mg/l to 6000mg/l), consequently, COD and sulfate removal in ABR reached to 80% and 9...

بررسی ارتباط افت فشار و ظرفیت حذف هیدروژن سولفاید با بار ورودی در بیوفیلتراسیون با بستر لجن فعال و مخلوط لجن فعال با سیلیکای شلتوک برنج

Abstract Background: In recent years researchers have shown that increasing in pressure drop and low amount of elimination capacity are two main limitations of  biofiltration systems in pollutants treatment. Therefore, the main goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between pressure drop and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) elimination capacity with different mass loading rates in biof...

Experimental Comparison of Two Modifications of Activated Sludge for Treatment of Furfural-Containing Wastewater

A case study is presented in which two modifications of activated sludge treatment of complex chemical wastewater are experimentally compared: a combination of common activated sludge with powdered activated carbon treatment (PACT), and bioaugmentation of activated sludge treatment (BAST). Industrial wastewater of Pars Oil Refinery that was passed through an oil recovery stage was used to inve...

Production and Characterization of Adsorbent Materials from Sewage Sludge by Pyrolysis

The conventional sludge disposal options include landfill, application to farmland and forestry and incineration. However, since in the last decade sewage sludge and industrial sludge are being generated in increasing amounts due to the rapid urbanization and industrialization, a growing interest has been devoted in developing cost effective and renewable disposal alternatives. Among them, the ...

Adsorption and toxicity of heavy metals on activated sludge

The adsorption of Cu, Cd, Ni, Zn, and Cr from synthetic solutions on powdered activated carbon (PAC), activated sludge, and dried sludge were investigated under laboratory conditions to assess its ability to remove heavy metals. The adsorption efficiency increased rapidly within the first 30 min and then slowed down as it approached a steady state after 5 h of contact time. The results showed t...
